Late summer and Early Fall in Buffalo Niagara

Even as the days grow shorter and the weather cools, fun events in Buffalo Niagara continue to heat up in late summer and early fall.

The city and its suburbs continue to brim with festival and fair-goers well into September. Watch a concert or demolition derby, ride the Tilt-a-Whirl or try your hand at a game of chance at the 171st Erie County Fair, the third largest county fair in the nation, Aug. 11 to 22 (www.ecfair.org). The following weekend at the fairgrounds, listen to Irish music, dine on corned beef and shepherd’s pie and watch step-dancing at the 29th annual Buffalo Irish Festival, Aug. 27 to 29 (www.buffaloirish.com). After that, feast on Buffalo’s most famous and celebrated food at the National Buffalo Wing Festival, Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 4 and 5. The festival draws tens of thousands of wing fans each year to Coca-Cola Field, eager to sample the best wings from Western New York and around the country (www.buffalowing.com).

Enjoy the city’s art and music scenes throughout the rest of 2010. The 11th annual Elmwood Avenue Festival of the Arts will feature 170 artists and craftspeople selling work across 16 different media, as well as 50 musical and creative performances on three stages, on Aug. 28 and 29 (www.elmwoodartfest.org). On Sept. 11, Buffalo’s eighth annual Music is Art festival will include more than 40 bands and 50 artists at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (www.musicisart.org). The festival was founded in 2003 by the Buffalo-born bassist for the Goo Goo Dolls, Robby Takac, who wanted to increase the profile of musicians and bands across Western New York. From Sept. 24 through December, check out Beyond/In WNY, an exhibition of art by more than 100 artists at a dozen galleries and art spaces across the region (www.beyondinwny.org).

Buffalo’s renowned performing arts scene kicks into high gear on Sept. 10, when the city’s theater district hosts “Curtain Up!” which is a celebration of Buffalo’s 2010-2011 theater season. Shea’s Performing Arts Center, the crown jewel of the theater district, will host a black-tie dinner, followed by an evening of live performances at theaters across the district and an after-party, which is open to the public. This year, Shea’s will host such traveling Broadway shows as Mary Poppins (Oct. 14 to 31), Dreamgirls (Dec. 14 to 19), Shrek The Musical (Feb. 22 to 27, 2011), Young Frankenstein (March 22 to 27, 2011), Wicked (Apr. 27 to May 22, 2011) and West Side Story (June 7 to 12, 2011). For more information about shows and upcoming 2010-2011 performances at theaters across the area, visit www.theatreallianceofbuffalo.com.

A unique opportunity to visit architectural gems on both sides of the border takes place Oct. 16 and 17, during Doors Open Niagara. Dozens of buildings - some famous, some obscure - will be open for free public viewing that weekend (www.doorsopenniagara.ca).

Cooking the Wright Way

Ever wondered about the dining habits of Frank Lloyd Wright’s clients? Join us for a talk by the author of The Fallingwater Cookbook, Suzanne Martinson, on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 9:15 am at Graycliff, 6472 Old Lakeshore Rd, Derby, NY (20 minutes from downtown Buffalo.)

Best of all, Martinson will provide samples of Clove Cake, one of the recipes enjoyed by the Edgar J. and Liliane Kaufman and their son, Edgar, Jr., original owners of Fallingwater. The Fallingwater Cookbook is subtitled: Elsie Henderson's Recipes and Memories, and Martinson’s entertaining and educational talk will reveal the tastes of and hospitality provided by the Kaufman family and their cook, Elsie Henderson.

The author of The Fallingwater Cookbook, Suzanne Martinson, is a former food editor and writer for both the Pittsburgh Press and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. In her talk at Graycliff, she will discuss recipes from Elsie Henderson, the longtime and last cook for the Kaufmann family at Fallingwater. Martinson will also reveal Henderson's humorous and affectionate memories and anecdotes of life in the renowned house on the waterfall, such as encounters John Heinz, Senator Ted Kennedy, and Frank Lloyd Wright, and details about life with the Kaufman family.

There is no admission charge for the talk, and a basic tour of Graycliff will be available immediately afterwards. RESERVATIONS ARE NECESSARY FOR BOTH THE TALK AND/OR THE TOUR. Admission to the tour will be $15 for adults, $10 for students (age 10-22 with i.d.) The talk and tour are not suitable for children under age ten. Copies of the book will be available for signing by the author.

About Graycliff: Set high on a cliff with sweeping views over Lake Erie, Graycliff
stands as an architectural jewel awaiting your discovery. Built between 1926 and 1931, the Graycliff Estate was designed by the renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright for Isabelle R. Martin and her husband, Larkin Company executive Darwin D. Martin. Graycliff served as the Martin summer home from 1927 to the mid-1940s. A complex of three buildings set amidst more than eight acres of rolling lawns and gardens also designed by Wright, Graycliff is a scenic and simple 20 minute drive south of downtown Buffalo in the town of Derby. A New York State Landmark, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Graycliff Estate is a vital element of the community-wide initiative to advance cultural tourism. Frank Lloyd Wright designed Graycliff for Isabelle Martin, and it was she who had the most influence over the design. Isabelle Martin’s failing vision led her to direct Wright to create structures full of sunlight and air. Wright fulfilled her wishes magnificently.

About the Graycliff Conservancy: The non-profit Graycliff Conservancy was founded in 1997 specifically to acquire, preserve, and restore the Graycliff Estate. A true grass-roots success story, thanks to volunteers and professionals throughout Western New York and across the United States, the Graycliff Conservancy has accomplished most of its original goals, and is making great progress in completing restoration of the Graycliff Estate, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Made in America Store

Many shoppers are looking more and more for American-made goods. Often times the label may say “Made in America” but that isn’t always true of the entire product. Mark Andol decided to seek out products that are 100% made in America and is on a mission to “Save Our Country First.”

Andol, owner of General Welding and Fabricating, lost a big contract to a foreign company and was forced to lay off 20 employees. He decided that he would open a store featuring totally American made products. It was difficult to find products that did not have a portion made from anything foreign but through careful research he has done just that.

The Made in America Store has offerings ranging from food, clothing, candles, home décor, games and garden accessories. It also showcases the wonderful and whimsical outdoor furnishings created by Mark and his other company General Welding (fish chairs, stainless steel tables and fire pits to name a few). The store is located in Elma off the Maple Street exit of the 400 Expressway. They are open Monday through Saturday 8am-8pm and Sunday from 11am-4pm. For more information call (716) 652-4USA or visit their website at www.saveourcountryfirst.com.

Woyshners - Celebrating 50 Years

Back in 1960, Jack and Patricia Woyshner purchased a small greenhouse and opened a flower shop at 910 Ridge Road in Lackawanna. The Woyshners quickly became the “go-to” people to make any occasion special.

Over the years, the couple attended many floral design schools and classes both nationally and internationally. Pat worked for 16 years at the White House, designing for Christmas and large parties. With those experiences under their belts, they opened the Woyshner Christmas Shoppe in 2000, bringing the joy of the holiday season year ‘round to Western New York. Every day is Christmas at Woyshners in their beautiful gallery of gifts, decorations and arrangements. The Shoppe features thousands of ornaments, Department 56 Villages, Santas, angels, snowmen, Irish gifts, bridal sets and collectibles. See their themed trees, featuring the latest color trends or ask designers to create a beautiful permanent wreath, centerpiece or holiday arrangement for your home.

For more information on Woyshners Christmas Shoppe call (716) 821-0416 and for information on the flower shop call (716) 823-3408. You can also visit online at www.woyshnersflowers.com.

Desperados Barbecue & Catering Co.

You may be familiar with Desperados as caterers, who for years have been a favorite for barbecue at many Western New York events. Now you can enjoy their authentic southwestern barbecue at their restaurant located at 29 Commercial Street in the Village of Angola.

As you enter the premises, you are aware of the “Old West” décor and the smell of barbecue whets your appetite for what is to come – some of the best smoked meats and side dishes around. They start with the most superior quality meats and the freshest and finest ingredients are used in blending their signature rubs. The consistency of flavor and tenderness are maintained by smoking and cooking most menu items in a genuine Friedrich Smokehouse. Top off your barbecue with a choice of sauces – sweet & tangy, hot & spicy and hickory smoke (all made without preservatives and available for purchase to take home), add in a couple of side dishes and you will be hog heaven. They feature St. Louis style ribs, Kansas chicken, pulled pork & chicken and Texas beef brisket. Their homemade sides include coleslaw, macaroni & cheese, Southwestern smoky beans, State Fair salt potatoes, corn bread with honey butter and more. There is also a daily side dish and soup special.

Don't have time to cook?

They can have your order ready to take home, to the office, or to the tailgate party with just a quick phone call. Download their convenient Dine In and Takeout Menu for making ordering a breeze. Fast service for small lunch and dinner takeouts. Orders of 25-50 can usually be ready within one hour. Please give 24 hours notice for larger parties.

For do it yourself catering, business meetings and office luncheons their Drop Off Catering or Express Service pick up and go packages are perfect for buffet style dining. They provide all the necessary paper products, utensils, condiments and warming essentials upon request.
