EAGERLY ANTICIPATED CHAUTAUQUA WINE FESTIVAL TO SHOWCASE LOCAL, STATE WINES

America’s Grape Country Wine Festival, being held in Dunkirk, New York at the Chautauqua County Fair Grounds in August, will feature over 23 wineries from across New York State. The festival will help support the viniculture found locally and in other New York grape growing regions. The festival is the kick off event for America’s Grape Country Week between August 9 and August 17.
America’s Grape Country Wine Festival will take place Saturday and Sunday, August 9 and 10, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., both days.

The AGC Wine Festival is being held in the heart of the Chautauqua-Lake Erie wine region along the Interstate-90 thruway. This wine region is the oldest and largest Concord grape growing region in the world. It is also home to the largest grape growing region in the entire Eastern United States. The AGC Wine Festival was created and planned to celebrate the Chautauqua-Lake Erie wine region, as well as wines produced in New York State as a whole.

The AGC Wine Festival will not only showcase some of the state’s finest wines, there will also be live musical entertainment all weekend. Food vendors, arts and crafts, farmer’s market and educational wine seminars will all be available both Saturday and Sunday. Every winery in attendance will have their own booth offering free wine tastings and sales by the bottle.

Among the festivities available throughout the weekend, Mark Baldwin, local artist, will present his long anticipated illustration of the America’s Grape Country regional geography and history. His presentation will be on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Baldwin is the artist responsible for the popular illustration of Chautauqua Lake sold in tourist shops throughout the county. He will be autographing copies of his map after his speech. Also, Shannon Brock, of the New York Wine and Culinary Center in Canandaigua, New York, will be organizing the educational seminars at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday. The seminars will be instructed by a professional from the Wine and Culinary Center.

“When people realize that we produce wine in New York State, they ask what Finger Lake we’re on. This area needs this festival. The festival will help local wine producers to become recognized for being in a wine region, not just a grape juice region. And it will also help strengthen the New York State wine market as a whole,” said Bill Merritt, President of Merritt Estate Winery in Forestville, NY. The Chautauqua-Lake Erie Wine Trail has 21 wineries between North East, Pennsylvania and Silver Creek, New York. Most of the Chautauqua County wineries will have booths at the AGC Wine Festival.

“Wine production is a huge tourist attraction for Chautauqua County. The wine industry in New York State averages around 4.2 million tourist visits each year,” said Edwin Rodriguez, Marketing and Promotions Director for Merritt Estate Winery. “That number alone can tell you something about the popularity of wine and grape products in our state.” According to the New York Wine and Grape Foundation, the wine industry accounts for approximately $3.4 Billion in total economic impact for the state. “We really want to show visitors from other states and individuals in our own communities just how proud we are to offer such a wonderful product, and this festival is the perfect time,” said Rodriguez.

To purchase tickets to America’s Grape County Wine Festival or to find out more information, please call 1-888-965-4834 or visit www.agcwinefestival.com.

The Chautauqua-Lake Erie wine region is the largest grape growing region of New York State. The grapes and wines produced in this region rival the quality of premium vintages throughout the world.

"Red, White, and Blues Festival" and “The Sauce Boss” Ready to Rock the Village of Fredonia, NY

FestivalsFredonia announced that the "Red, White, and Blues Festival", to be held in Downtown Fredonia, New York (located off I-90 at Exit 59) September 5 & 6, 2008 is ready for "company". "The "blues" bands are scheduled, with the headliner, “The Sauce Boss” on board and the "Taste of Fredonia" well on its way to being complete.” the committee reported.

The festival, which happens every year the first weekend after Labor Day in September, is everything you’ve come to expect, thanks to sponsors and support from Village merchants. Touted as the “Best Street Party Around”, all concerts are free and the weather’s always great. So, come on down for the fun.

But back to "The Sauce Boss"--ONE MORNING IN THE EARLY 70'S, THE SAUCE BOSS WALKED OUT OF HIS HOUSE AND FOUND A 1933 VINTAGE NATIONAL STEEL GUITAR in his front yard. Years later he combined his blues with his hot sauce in a big pot of gumbo, made right on stage. Singing the recipe, he mixed his music and cooking together into a new medium.

SINCE 1990, THE SAUCE BOSS HAS FED OVER 200,000 PEOPLE, a few at a time...all for free, while playing his own swampy Florida blues. The Sauce Boss says, "If we could forget our differences for a moment, sit down to the table, share some dinner, and treat each other like neighbors, maybe we could work some of this stuff out." A Sauce Boss event transcends performance. It's a soul-shouting picnic of rock & roll brotherhood... involving everyone."

JIMMY BUFFETT SINGS ABOUT THE SAUCE BOSS in his "I Will Play for Gumbo" song. Parrotheads all over the country are bringing the Sauce Boss to "play' and a' sway' with the gumbo" at their events. His songs "Let the Big Dog Eat" and "Great Big Fanny" appeared on the Jimmy Buffett compilation album "Margaritaville Café Late Night Menu". And "Let the Big Dog Eat" is also in Jonathan Demme's film "Something Wild". NPR's "All Things Considered" and "Morning Edition" have both covered the Sauce Boss. CNN and EXTRA sent film crews to New York City Sauce Boss extravaganzas in 2000, The Food Network's series "Extreme Cuisine" visited the Sauce Boss on location in New York, and another Food Network series "Keith Famie's Adventures" filmed a Sauce Boss show in Miami, which aired on 6/17/02. And "Gourmet Magazine" featured the Sauce Boss in December 2002.

In keeping with the spirit, local establishments will sport containers just made for filling. The monies will go to local food pantries and "Planet Gumbo", a non-profit organization set up to "shelter the homeless and feed the hungry”. Not to leave out our furry friends – a car wash will be held to benefit the “Lakeshore Humane Society”.

Now, back to the beginning – it all starts Friday, Sept. 5th, early evening –“Uptown” – with food, motocross demonstrations and music at the Fredonia Beaver Club, followed by music at the Liberty Café and later, more music and events back at the Fredonia Beaver Club (see brochure for map and times).
Saturday the 6th – “Downtown” - begins with music in the park sponsored by the Fredonia Chamber of Commerce, as the "Taste of Fredonia" gets underway at 12 noon. But wait there's more--as the participating restaurants are dishing out their best--the red and white wine tasting begins and the music starts heating up with other performers in the Gazebo. Coughlan’s Pub begins the blues band roster at 2:00 pm. The entertainment is non-stop after that. Coughlan’s, The White Inn, Eastside Grill, Coyle’s Pub, Muldoons, Heenan’s Pub, Old Main Inn, 41 West, Sunny’s, Valentine’s Place, and the Ellicottville Brew Club are all ready and waiting. (Please ask for a schedule/brochure by calling 1-888-FREDONI(A)—1-888-373-3664).
The concerts in the park and throughout the Village are all free. So enjoy “The Sauce Boss”, his Blues Band and fourteen of the best blues bands from the greater WNY area. Add vendors, children activities, a Bike Run, sidewalk artists, the Farmers’ Market and wine tasting -and you've got the "best street party ever..."and it lasts all weekend!
For more information or schedule, please call 1-888-FREDONI(A) (888-373-3664).

“Best Kept Secrets – An Evening of Passionate American Song”

Founded in 1883, the Chautauqua County Historical Society is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2008. To celebrate, the historical society is presenting “Best Kept Secrets - An Evening of Passionate American Song” at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House on Saturday, September 20 at 8 p.m. Performing will be internationally acclaimed soprano Maria Ferrante accompanied by the equally renowned pianist Lincoln Mayorga in their first Chautauqua County appearance. “Ferrante is blessed with an extraordinary vocal technique and an equally enviable sense of lyrical expression,” according to music critic David Lasky of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

Miss Ferrante will perform over two dozen 19th century parlor songs from the collection of the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Massachusetts. With Mayorga’s accompaniment, Ferrante breathes new life into these musical gems that delighted previous generations of Americans. She’ll sing songs of love and loss, of joy and care, of sweet innocence and community, songs our great great grandparents sang while sitting around the piano in the parlor. Ferrante says, “There’s a spirit in this music we can learn from and embrace today.”

“We chose to stage the recital at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House because the Town of Pomfret is celebrating its Bicentennial this year,” explained James O’Brien, president of the historical society. “Plus the landmark building is historic in its own right and SUNY Fredonia’s first-rate music program is a regional treasure.”

Tickets can be purchased at the Fredonia Opera House, 9 Church Street, Fredonia NY or by calling (716) 679-1891. The historical society gratefully acknowledges the support of the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation and Lake Shore Savings Bank.

Zebro’s on the Lake Harbor House Adds Outdoor Raw Bar

Brothers, Dave and Greg Zimmerman purchased the former Barcelona Harbor House a year ago. They have added some of their own touches to the restaurant including zebra theme décor in the lounge area, while keeping the charm of the former Barcelona Harbor House. One of the biggest changes that occurred is the addition of a patio, which now includes a raw bar.

The patio overlooking Lake Erie was long overdue for this precious stretch of waterfront. Open daily at 11am, they serve oysters, clams and a beach menu is offered for those who would like something less formal then their normal indoor menu. There is also a full service bar for all of your favorite summertime beverages. Sit by the architectural fireplace (shaped like an anchor) and enjoy live music throughout the week (call for schedule). A volleyball court will provide additional recreation for those with competitive spirit. In July, they anticipate the boardwalk from the patio to the beach area to be complete, making this the perfect place to enjoy a sunset and cool off in Lake Erie. If you are a boat owner, dock space is available at Barcelona Harbor for the day or overnight and it is just steps from Zebro’s. They have some fun theme parties planned this season (Mardi Gras, pig roast, etc.) and they will be happy to cater your private party either on their patio or in their spacious restaurant.

The main restaurant features fresh seafood (right from next door at Westfield Fisheries) including Lake Erie perch. On Wednesday they offer all-you-can-eat crab from 4pm-closing. Their menu also includes a variety of meat and vegetarian specialties with homemade soups and daily specials.

For more information about Zebro’s, call them at (716) 326-2017 or check out their website at www.zebrosharborhouse.com.

Friday and Saturday afternoons will be highlighted by The Lucy Show and Life With Lucy film fests on the large screen in the Reg Lenna Civic Center. “Lucy Under the Stars” -- free outdoor movies -- will be shown Friday and Saturday nights, weather permitting.

Sunday will commemorate Vivian Vance, the wonderful woman best known as “Ethel Mertz.” A morning tribute will be hosted by Vivian’s sister, Lou Ann Graham, and We Love Lucy Fan Club president Tom Watson. Sunday afternoon Ms. Graham and “Ethel” (actress Rhonda Medina) will welcome guests aboard The Summer Wind for “Ethel’s Showboat Cruise” on Lake Chautauqua. On Friday and Saturday afternoons, Ms. Graham, an accomplished actress herself, will teach comedy improv workshops.
A picnic lunch will be on the menu Sunday when the village of Celoron hosts the Lucy-Desi Fan Reunion. Special guest Wanda Clark, Lucille Ball’s long-time secretary, will share never-before-seen family scrapbook pictures.
On nine occasions during the weekend a different festival celebrity will host Lucytown Tours, when riders will enjoy a guided tour of area locations important to Lucille Ball, culminating with a stop at the cemetery where she is buried.

Live music from Infinity Performing Arts Project and three contests – Lucy’s Goofy Golfing, Candy Factory Antics, and Egg Stuffing – will be just some of the free street activities throughout the weekend. The Downtown Jamestown Development Corporation (DJDC) will sponsor the Taste of Jamestown on Friday, with restaurants outdoors, featuring some of their signature menu items. On Saturday and Sunday, DJDC will bring craft vendors, live entertainment, children’s activities and more!

Weekend Guest Pass holders can visit the original Lucy-Desi Museum, the new Lucy-Desi Museum, and the Desilu Playhouse as often as they like. Admission to both Lucy-Desi Museums is free to Museum members.

135th Season at Chautauqua Institution

Chautauqua Institution will commence its 135th season on June 21, 2008, with a week that celebrates the arts, education, religion and recreation in grand fashion.

Chautauqua brings five powerful voices to its renowned morning lecture platform for Week One with a focus on “Sport in America.” Lecturers include Frank Deford, senior contributing writer at Sports Illustrated and commentator on NPR’s “Morning Edition”; Clark Kellogg, analyst for CBS Sports’ NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship; Donna Lopiano, immediate past chief executive officer of the Women’s Sports Foundation and recently named one of “The 10 Most Powerful Women in Sports” by Fox Sports; George Bodenheimer, president of ESPN, Inc., and ABC Sports; and NFL Commissioner and longtime Chautauquan Roger Goodell.

Sport looms large in American culture, whether from an economic perspective or through the lens of its impact on our lifestyles and customs. During this week, lecturers will examine the economics and impact of sports on our cities, our youth, education and culture.

Karen Armstrong, contemporary and historical religion’s most prolific author, returns to Chautauqua as the Department of Religion’s afternoon lecturer for Week One. Armstrong is a highly sought-after lecturer around the world, and is called upon by governments, universities and church and secular organizations alike to educate on the world’s religions and to inform regarding their place in the modern world. She has been honored around the world, especially as a bridge-builder between the Abrahamic Faiths of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Preaching from Chautauqua’s national ecumenical pulpit during Week One’s morning worship services will be Revs. L. Gregory and Susan P. Jones, both of Duke Divinity School. Rev. Gregory Jones is an ordained United Methodist pastor who has served since 1997 as the eleventh dean of Duke Divinity School. Rev. Susan Jones is an ordained elder in the WNC Conference of the United Methodist Church where she chairs the Order of Elder. She also serves as the director of clergy formation at Duke Divinity School. The Joneses have recently written two books on attentiveness and forgiveness in the “Living the Good Life Together” series published by the United Methodist Publishing House.

Evenings at Chautauqua offer an “ecstatic mix” of arts and special entertainment opportunities to suit every taste. Programs include the Logan Chamber Music Series on Monday afternoons, the Family Entertainment Series on Tuesday evenings, and special performances in the 5,000-seat Amphitheater throughout the week. The Chautauqua Ballet Company will open its 2008 season with the Chautauqua Dance Salon on Thursday, June 26, and Week One will conclude with two of the biggest performing arts events of the season. On Saturday evening, Chautauqua Theater Company kicks off its 25th anniversary season with Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman,” directed by CTC co-artistic director Ethan McSweeny and starring Chautauqua favorite Stuart Margolin. That same evening, the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra will begin its season under new music director Stefan Sanderling.

From its earliest days, Chautauqua has embraced the recreative experience as an essential ingredient in living well. The Institution offers two fitness centers, a new sailing facility, tennis courts, two award-winning golf courses and youth programs. On Saturday, June 28, Chautauqua Golf Club will celebrate the grand opening of the Golf Learning Center. Situated on 25 scenic acres overlooking Chautauqua Lake, the center boasts a 300-yard driving range; two putting greens; a chipping green with fairway, rough and bunker approaches; three practice holes; a support building with indoor teaching spaces, patio and bathrooms; and parking.

That’s just the opening week at Chautauqua and there are 8 more exciting weeks to follow. Get all the latest information at www.ciweb.org.
